Care for Cleveleys has launched a new Lone Litter Pickers Scheme. Enabling you to go out in the town centre at a time that’s convenient to you. It’s very similar to the Lone Beach Cleaners scheme which our friends at the Rossall Beach Group run. A very successful scheme it’s made a huge difference to how clean Rossall Beach now is.
About the Cleveleys Lone Litter Pickers Scheme
Litter costs the country a phenomenal amount of money each year and creates untold damage in many ways. Cleveleys is a coastal town so rubbish which blows about in the town centre could even wind up on the beach. With streets at or below sea level it contributes to flooding when it goes down the grids and drains.
Plus which it’s unsightly! The Care for Cleveleys volunteers love our town and we like to keep it nice and clean. Once you start picking up litter and looking after the public realm it’s surprising how annoying it is!
Wyre Council is our local authority responsible for street cleansing. They sweep the streets each morning with a pavement sweeping vehicle and provide/empty the bins.
Our Lone Litter Pickers is a voluntary scheme which calls for people to supplement the existing service. Do as much or as little extra manual collection as you would like to do. You can do it at a time and on a day which is convenient for you. There’s no requirement to commit to a regular routine, it can be entirely ad-hoc.
How Lone Litter Pickers Works
Care for Cleveleys will lend you a set of equipment including a sack hoop, pickers and a hi-viz vest. We’ll brief you about areas to cover, health and safety and necessary information, and ask you to sign for equipment. You will also be asked to report back each time you go out litter-picking. Report how long you’ve been out, roughly where you’ve been and how much litter you’ve collected. (We need this kind of information to help when we’re applying for grants and such like).
You might want to litter pick entirely on your own. You could buddy up with someone you already know, or team up with a new Care for Cleveleys friend.
The equipment we use is expensive – a full set costs in the region of £50. So we ask that you take care of it. If your circumstances change and you don’t do any collecting for 6 consecutive weeks you should hand it back. Then someone else can use it.

Join our Community Clean Ups
Don’t forget that Care for Cleveleys also organises monthly community clean-up mornings. Meet at 9.30am, roughly monthly on a Tuesday morning. Afterwards we all go for coffee at The Shipwreck! All the dates for community clean-ups are on the homepage of this website.
