Over the years the Care for Cleveleys volunteers have transformed existing ones and added Cleveleys In Bloom planters and pots to the town centre display. It’s turning the town from a concrete wilderness to a bright and cheerful place to visit!
You might be surprised to find out how many green spaces the volunteer gardeners actually look after!
And in 2024 the team has been looking at ways to install water butts and barrels to use grey water on the plants.
Cleveleys In Bloom Planters & Pots
Our running total as of Summer 2024 is up to 22 planters and pots around the town centre! Until water collection and watering the plants is resolved we can’t add any more new ones to this total.
Half Barrels
Three half barrels, for sale at a bargain price on Facebook, proved too much to resist! Greenery was in short supply towards the tramway at Cleveleys Square so that’s where they ended up! Specially chosen for the conditions and flowering for most of the year they’ve brightened the street up no end. Plus a few home-grown tomatoes too!
Mary’s Garden and nearby Planters
Mary’s Garden was new for 2023, a quirky addition bringing the story of the Sea Swallow into the town centre. Along with it, three new wooden planters were added (pictured above). These are made from repurposed wooden groyne boards, donated by Wyre Council.
Bus Station
Cleveleys Town Centre Group is working hard to improve the dismal but vital bus station. In 2023, three new barrier baskets were bought and installed at the railings. Flowering non-stop from Spring to Winter they certainly helped to improve the space.
The ‘Triangle’
Opposite the bus station and also new for 2023, two huge planters were installed in the small pedestrian refuge between Derby Road Car Park and Rough Lea Road. With plants chosen to withstand the rough salty winds, they’ve proven to be very successful and certainly improve the space.
The Clock Garden
This was completely empty when the Care for Cleveleys volunteers adopted it way back int he day. It’s been planted with a variety of hardy species but in January 2024 the clock garden was completely redesigned and replanted. Now with a seaside theme it’s an amazing addition to the town centre.
Clock Shelter
Our lovely little landmark has been looked after over the years and improved with the addition of a couple of large self-watering planters. These have been a welcome splash of colour at a main junction.
The Big Grey Pots
Known as ‘giant ashtrays’ when Care for Cleveleys first started, the large grey pots in the town centre are a striking addition to the street scene. Now planted with a variety of seasonal displays and a growing collection of herbaceous and shrubby plants, these are well maintained and attractive year-round.
Another three of these big grey pots can also be found at the promenade – also looked after by Care for Cleveleys.
Plus Gardens…
Derby Road
New for 2024 is a new flower bed at the entrance to Derby Road car park. This will welcome people to the town and make an attractive addition to the new tree planting along the grass verge of the car park.
Rough Lea Road
Again, the long border at Rough Lea Road was badly neglected until the Care for Cleveleys volunteers set to work. After a considerable amount of effort and time spent manually weeding, planting could begin. Now, this long border looks a picture. It’s a year-round garden with mixed shrubs, trees and perennial plants which bursts into flower from Spring onwards.
