The huge pieces of public art on Cleveleys seafront are popular with visitors and locals alike. Now you can get your Mythic Coast Merchandise from the Care for Cleveleys Shop!
Mary’s Shell, the Ogre and his paddle, and the graceful white sculpture are all taken from the story of the Sea Swallow. You can even buy the book too!
The Story of the Mythic Coast
Wyre Council undertook a huge civil engineering project to rebuild the stepped sea defences at Cleveleys. The necessary transformation offered an opportunity to breathe life into the seaside town. They commissioned a new children’s story book, and from it developed an art trail.
The Sea Swallow is written by Gareth Thompson and illustrated by Hannah Mcgee. It weaves narrative and facts, together with lots of local folklore, into a story of hope and triumph.
In 2025, Care for Cleveleys began bringing the Mythic Coast story to life! Look out for the Ogre, trees from the petrified forest, Mary and her dad, at the annual Mythic Coast Day.
Mythic Coast Merchandise
Mary’s Shell endlessly poses for photographs, in all weathers, and all through the year. See it featured in sunsets, storms and just surrounded by golden sand.
The Ogre is a bit of a puzzle for most people. He was never easy to find, blending in so well with his rock groyne on the beach. In 2025 he became even more of a puzzle, surrounded now by a tricky maze! Navigate your way and your reward is finding our friendly giant!
The Paddle, white Sea Swallow and Shipwreck Memorial are all easy to spot – find them on the wide promenade footpath.
Call into the Care for Cleveleys Shop and you can buy your own Mythic Coast Merchandise. Take home your very own mini-me Ogre, keyrings and fridge magnets, and even a copy of the book.

Making the Mini-Ogres
Daniel Thornton, owner of Phillips Jewellers in Cleveleys, is responsible for the mini-me Ogres! Using his own drone, he’s 3D scanned the real-life Ogre on the beach, then made a solid version with his 3D printer. This is how the limited edition silver pendants were made, using the ‘lost wax’ technique. And Daniel makes the mini-me Ogres, here in Cleveleys at Phillips Jewellers.
